I suggested above just how easy it would be to "scandalize Victorians like Captain Whall" with lyrics that today would hardly elicit notice. Well, I can't resist posting an example. It's extremity surprises even me. From the "Literary World" (Boston) (July 23, 1887): "Tolstoi...writes novels as dirty and obscene as the worst parts of Walt Whitman's 'Leaves of Grass.'"
