I can't recall anything as an example, but I have been taught songs by ear at workshops that have had phrases changed to make them more secular or gender nuetral or to scan better with a 'new' tune. If people relied on recordings of the workshops to cement the words in memory they might spread with the changes made. Seperatly, what is the practice amongst story tellers ? That seems very close to narrative ballads.
