Hi Al

i played a lot of cricket in both the Lancashire and Yorkshire Leagues.

It was very common for the groundsmen to advise the skipper whether to bat or field. It would be an unwise many who didn't listen.
On the other hand it also used to happen that the captains would ask the groundsmen to try to prepare a wicket to suit the home team's strengths. Often it worked too.

When I was playing Trent Bridge was known as a Billiard Table. A flat wicket that was a batsman's Paradise. Looking at the first two days of the current Test it has changed somewhat.
