Hi,

Indeed, the real Titty's name was Mavis, as far as I know. Titty is a reference to Titty Mouse, but it's the first time I heard that she chose it herself.
I wonder if the name change would have worked better with her being called Mavis in the film.

I still would have preferred an explanation, though. All it would take is for her to have taken a TM&TM book along and a shot showing the front page with the title and "For Mavis Titty" on it. (It could even be TM&TM by the river, so it also simply introduces their fascination with the water.)
I believe the 1974 film also explained her name, with her writing her full name on her new diary or something like that, as they had "Titania" (IIRC) as her real first name.

Though naming her "Tatty" has a certain logic to it, now that I think about it I don't think I like it very much. It just doesn't have the right sound. In the BBC series, she was "Kitty". Caused quite a few complaints in 1963 apparently, but it sounds better. Of course, to an audience of people who actually read TM&TM, as children, the associations would probably be more about the characters in that book, which would give quite a different feel to the name change. So, I'll return to my position that explaining the name would probably work best.

Bye,
