Funny this old thread should pop up just when we had a similar conversation at church. Our Anglican church uses the 1940 Episcopal Hymnal which also does not have "titles" for the hymns. I haven't been able to find any good reason, other than to consider that the original texts mostly were untitled anyway. Also, quite a few are snipped from much longer poems by writers like Charles Wesley and Isaac Watts -- the snippets would not have had individual titles. Others are translations of ancient Latin texts that never had titles either. It may also relate to the ancient church practice of referring to Psalm texts by their first phrases (as in, 'dominus regit me') rather than by their numbers.
