M. Ted (inactive) Did Video kill Arnold Bax? (7) Did Video kill Arnold Bax? 01 Nov 00

I have been mulling over the lyrics to "Video Killed the Radio Star"(not a folksong, but....) everyone thinks of this song in terms of MTV, and scarcely a week goes by that some music reviewer, somewhere, doesn't allude to the idea--the thing is that the song is not about MTV, it seems to be about a composer whose music was commercially exploited--- I have been wracking my brain, trying to figure out who this could be about, and what the story behind it is..Now(here's where the folk music comes in) my best guess so far is that the composer is Sir Arnold Bax, who in fact died in 1953, and whose Second Symphony was associated with some sort of...well, I am a little vague on what, but it was something...

Bax used much folk music in his compositions, primarily (If I remember correctly) of the Northumbrian sort, and was given a title and some other high honors by the King (which, as An American, I am hopelessly muddled in either understanding or explaining), but fell into obscurity as the atonalists and serial composers came into the spotlight--

Anyway, does anyone know anything about any of this?(Keep in mind that I know what I have included here because I saw a movie about him once on TV)

Here are the lyrics in question:

VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR

By The Buggles

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty Two Lying awake intent at tuning in on you. If I was young it didn't stop you coming through.

Oh-a, oh...

They took the credit for your second symphony. Rewritten by machine and new technology, and now I understand the problems you can see.

Oh-a, oh, I met your children Oh-a, oh... What did you tell them?

Video killed the radio star. Video killed the radio star. Pictures came and broke your heart.

Oh-a-a-a oh...

And now we meet in an abandoned studio. We hear the playback and it seems so long ago. And you remember the jingles used to go.

Oh-a, oh, You were the first one. Oh-a, oh... You were the last one.

Video killed the radio star. Video killed the radio star. In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far Oh-a-aho, oh, Oh-a-aho, oh...

Video killed the radio star. Video killed the radio star.

In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far. Pictures came and broke your heart, put the blame on VTR.

You are a radio star...

Video killed the radio star...
