CrapCleaner is a good, free, utility which gets rid of many of the useless files that accumulate on your PC in time. Run that first.

MyDefrag is a good, free, disk defragmentation tool that does many things that the internal Windows tools doesn't, and does the thing
that it does do, better.

If your Internet provider gives you the McAfee or Norton suites for
free, they often contain some registry clean-up utilities that may
or may not help you, but are unlikely to hurt.

Of course "freezing and hanging" can be indicative of a virus, and
in giving the above advice I assume that you have scanned the system
with one of the reputable antivirus tools, either free or paid.
