Dale Rose Susana Seivane, piper- Listen up! (30) Susana Seivane, piper- Listen up! 17 Sep 00

OK, so I should have said listen up, if you want to, but you would be wise to heed the imperative. Besides, there wasn't room to put all those words!

In a thread entitled BS: What do you think Mbo Roger in Sheffield put up a sound clip of an absolutely magical song on the pipes. A little detective work, and I found that it was Sabelina, by Susana Seivane, 23 year old piper from Galicia in Northern Spain. (sound clip compliments of, a fine magazine) I figured Susana Seivane deserved a thread of her own, so here it is.

Review from Folk World:

Susana Seivane
Label: Do Fol; Df-015-CD; Playing time: 43.42 min
Susana Seivane is a young 23 years old female piper from Northern Spain. This self titled album is her debut solo album - solo meaning here an album of Susana with a backing band. Susana plays the Gaita (Spanish pipes) and various percussion instruments. The backing is provided on accordion, guitar, bouzoukÝ, bass guitar, violin, flute, keyboards, percussion and the fine voice of Sonia Lebedynski.
Susana started to play the pipes at the age of three, both her father and her grandfather are pipers. The album contains 11 tunes and 2 songs, all are sounding quite traditional, but most are written by contemporary artists. Northern Spain has a growing number of excellent pipers, Susana is surely one of the new stars. With this album she directly starts on a highly professional level, and it will be interesting to see where the next steps of her career will lead her... Everything in the booklet is written in three languages: Galaga, Spanish and English, so many people can understand it. Do Fol Christian Moll

Note, link to Do Fol was not working at the time of this writing, BUT I discovered somewhere that Green Linnet has released her album, making it MUCH easier to track it down.

From Green Linnet (this was on Sale through Green Linnet for $10.00 through September 10 ~~ oh, well.)

SUSANA SEIVANE: Susana Seivane Green Linnet #3137

This talented young piper has excited the traditional music world with her astonishing skill and enthusiasm. Seivane represents a new generation of musicians in her native Galicia, and she clearly has a great affection and reverence for the music of her heritage. Produced by Milladoiro's Rodrigo RomanÝ, this magnificent debut also features some of Spain's most prominent traditional musicians. Vibrant, joyful, and full of surprises, Susana Seivane ensures that the ancient Galician piping tradition is in good hands.

Sample the album in Real Audio format.

This info I got from the alway generous RA page from Green Linnet. Check it out for many other things of interest. Oh, and when they say SAMPLE, they are understating the matter ~~ these are FULL ALBUMS, quite listenable although recorded at 12 kbps. She sings one song, and Sonia Lebedynski sings another, the rest are instrumentals ~~ 43+ minutes of magic. (The object of course, is to get you to buy the album ~~ I just might do that. Thanks, Roger!)

Here's another interesting page Maybe Jon Freeman can find the English version (I couldn't) for those of us with limited language skills. Copernic found 159 references for her, most not in English.
