Come listen all ye miner lads that take the road in bye, And I will tell a tragic tale when ten times eight did die. At Easington in fifty one they saw the gates o hell, But they that lived to see the sight they did not live to tell.

The day the 29th o May a tragic trick o fate' Found the night shift on the face and foreshift in the gate. Explosion wrecked the Quarter seam and killed them all but one. And many a miner's humble home lost Father, brother, son.

Twas fire-damp beneath the cut coal dust fed the flame, That roared outbye till it was spent then roared inbye again. Tearing twisted road supports from their truly bed, And left behind our sorrow with the dying and the dead.

Within the hour from Houghton le the rescue team did come, With them hope to find the blind and listen for the dumb. But hope was killed by after-damp that gas we miners dread, Two rescue men with yellow birds were numbered with the dead.

Time has chained the widdows tears and hushed the orphans cries, For some the gloom will allways live for some the echoes die. She said "God bring them comfort", her words I do recall, There's no medals made for miners but they are heroes all.
